Best Small Personal Loans (Under $5,000)

Flexible borrowing for smaller expenses.

Small personal loans ($1k-$5k) are often the right tool when a 0% APR credit card offer isn't available and you need a fixed payoff schedule. Compare lenders below — origination fees matter more at small loan sizes because they're a larger percentage of the disbursement.

Frequently asked questions

  • What's the smallest personal loan I can get?
Most lenders start at $1,000-$2,000. Below that, you're typically looking at credit-builder loans (smaller amounts that build credit history) or buy-now-pay-later products.
  • Is a small personal loan better than a credit card?
Sometimes. If you can get a 0% APR balance transfer card and pay off within the intro period, that's usually cheaper. If you can't qualify for 0% or can't realistically pay it off in time, a personal loan's fixed schedule is usually better.
  • Why are origination fees a bigger deal on small loans?
A 5% origination fee on a $50k loan is $2,500 amortized over years. On a $2k loan, that's $100 deducted from a $2k disbursement — you actually receive $1,900 and still pay interest on $2k. Always net the disbursement against the fee.
  • Can I pay off a small loan early without penalty?
Almost all reputable personal lenders allow early payoff with no penalty — but always check the loan agreement. Origination fees aren't refundable, so paying off in month 1 still costs you the origination.
